Holy Family University Magazine
As art director, I was responsible for creating all of the editorial pages; as well as, the University ads that ran in the magazine. The semi-annual magazine won multiple design awards. I worked with award-winning photographers, and illustrators, on a variety of assignments usually with minimal advance notice.
The issue’s feature story was about a psychology professor’s journey from addiction through recovering. In class, he shares his experience to help others gain insight into dealing with addicts. The photo of him in a medicine bottle surrounded by pills helped convey the trapped nature of his addiction. On the next spread, he’s free from the bottle but still dealing with prescription medication all around him.
This story dealt with the difficult challenges many nursing students face when working in life and death situations. I wanted to capture the darkness of the piece and the isolation many nurses face after leaving the University and starting in their career.
The feature story was about the US immigration policy along the southern border and Dr. Jonathon Rosen’s latest book on the subject. He has written extensively on the subject of international crime, drug trafficking and gangs. The cover image illustrates a person on the outside of the US looking through a fence to freedom. The barbed wire used on the opening spread was continued on the secondary spreads.
Dr. Elizabeth Rielly-Carroll studies microscopic organisms in local watersheds to get a better understanding of their habits and their effect on the ecosystem. I mimicked her handwritten notes for the introductory paragraph and included images of her notes throughout the layout.
The Director of Campus Ministry shares his story of life as a minister while serving in the military. To show that dichotomy, we photographed him wearing both his religious and military attire, then I blended the two outfits.
The cover story about a student’s difficult journey from near-homelessness to serving as a teenage caretaker for her younger brother to eventual college graduate. The cover photo was taken in a dark, stone stairway to convey her difficult past. We photographer her in a field of yellow to show her emergence from a dark past into a bright future.
Cultivate / Report of the President
The “Cultivate” Report of the President illustrated how the University, like a tree, has a strong foundation and was continuing to grow. It also echoed a student’s journey as they enter the University as a seed, then grow with knowledge and eventually graduate as a full-grown tree.
The opening spread of each section showed the growth of a seed into a sapling and then eventually into a full grown tree out in the world. The concept mimics a student’s growth from first year student into a professional in the working world.
